Trying not to "hover" over the installers, but also need to be available if they have questions (like: is there a plug in the garage).

So I'm surfing around, and I found this: what type are you. (You have to use "character" as the password up there on the upper left corner.

I'm Marina Script. Now, granted, this is all Barnum statements and it's based on self-assessment (I claimed to be emotional, understated, traditional, and disciplined, based on four questions with two choices each).

The font is sort of a copperplate (the site says it was developed in the 1930s), you can seen an example here.

"This longwool knows that taking it easy isn't just a good idea; it's a great one. With an open mind and a dependable attitude, Perendales always make the best of any situation. Flexible and adaptable, they are great negotiators and compromisers as well."

(Actually, I think the "open mindedness" is just "I love so many different kinds of wool and knitting projects, I can't decide.")

You can take the quiz here. (The book it is to advertise is definitely on my wishlist.)

Been a while since I did one of these, but I actually like the result:

Two out of three isn't bad, though on an exam it would be 67%, which actually IS kind of bad....

Your result for The Presidential Capacity Test...

Chief Justice

89% Values, 58% Charisma and 88% Judgment!

“Our chief justices have probably had more profound and lasting influence on their times and on the direction of the nation than most presidents.” - Richard M. Nixon

Not this time. Let's face it. You're little too stuffy to make it to the top. Maybe you stutter, or maybe you're just not pretty enough - either way, the American public's not ready to have you stammering and muttering your way through press releases in front of the entire world.

You've got the credentials and you've got strong values, but your face is probably better suited in the Supreme Court. Hell, Chief Justice is one of the most prestigious positions there is. Your integrity and strong judgement makes you perfect for the role. We'll leave you to deal with all the legal mumbo jumbo and paperwork.

You know, of those three things, I would rather lack charisma than either of the other two (honesty and leadership skills). (And I can never objectively judge my looks. I put "below average" because the other choices were something like "Smokin hot!" and "Above average." And frankly, in this society, if you look "normal" for a woman, you're already "below average" by the way standards are.

And when I get nervous or talking too fast, I can stutter a bit. Or rather, stammer. I work hard to control it but if I'm tired, it does tend to come out.)

Besides, I'd RATHER be Chief Justice than President. Not as many people wanting you dead.

Sometimes, Barnum statements seem frighteningly accurate (The "hard" statements, especially the one about defensiveness, are embarrassingly true):

Your result for Are You a Jackie or a Marilyn? Or Someone Else? Mad Men-era Female Icon Quiz...

You Are a Grace!

mm.grace_.jpg

You are a Grace -- "I need to understand the world."

Graces have a need for knowledge and are introverted, curious, analytical, and insightful.

How to Get Along with Me

  • * Be independent, not clingy

  • * Speak in a straightforward and brief manner

  • * I need time alone to process my feelings and thoughts

  • * Remember that If I seem aloof, distant, or arrogant, it may be that I am feeling uncomfortable

  • * Make me feel welcome, but not too intensely, or I might doubt your sincerity

  • * If I become irritated when I have to repeat things, it may be because it was such an effort to get my thoughts out in the first place

  • * don't come on like a bulldozer

  • * Help me to avoid my pet peeves: big parties, other people's loud music, overdone emotions, and intrusions on my privacy

What I Like About Being a Grace
* standing back and viewing life objectively
* coming to a thorough understanding; perceiving causes and effects
* my sense of integrity: doing what I think is right and not being influenced by social pressure
* not being caught up in material possessions and status
* being calm in a crisis

What's Hard About Being a Grace

  • * being slow to put my knowledge and insights out in the world

  • * feeling bad when I act defensive or like a know-it-all

  • * being pressured to be with people when I don't want to be

  • * watching others with better social skills, but less intelligence or technical skill, do better professionally

Graces as Children Often

  • * spend a lot of time alone reading, making collections, and so on

  • * have a few special friends rather than many

  • * are very bright and curious and do well in school

  • * have independent minds and often question their parents and teachers

  • * watch events from a detached point of view, gathering information

  • * assume a poker face in order not to look afraid

  • * are sensitive; avoid interpersonal conflict

  • * feel intruded upon and controlled and/or ignored and neglected

Graces as Parents

  • * are often kind, perceptive, and devoted

  • * are sometimes authoritarian and demanding

  • * may expect more intellectual achievement than is developmentally appropriate

  • * may be intolerant of their children expressing strong emotions

Silly quiz thing:

What font are you?.

I cannot reproduce it here in the given font, but:

"You are Mrs. Eaves. Gosh, Mrs. Eaves. You enjoy the quiet and don't understand why the kids these days have to be so darn loud. You're a little fussy and a little old-fashioned, but you've got a big heart."

I will cop to the "fussy" and "old-fashioned" but I leave it to others to decide upon the size of my heart.

(examples of Mrs. Eaves.)

Oddly enough, I listed "Napoleon Dynamite" as the movie I would most likely choose to watch, and that was (apparently) not enough to overrule my thought that tea and a discussion of reading-lists would be an ideal date for me. (Though sadly I realize there are probably vanishingly few men on this planet who would find that a worthwhile date.)

There's this site, called the Typealyzer which will supposedly determine your Meyers-Briggs type based on your blog.

So of course, I had to do it:

The analysis indicates that the author of http://fillyjonk.blogspot.com is of the type:

ESTP - The Doers

"The active and play-ful type. They are especially attuned to people and things around them and often full of energy, talking, joking and engaging in physical out-door activities.

The Doers are happiest with action-filled work which craves their full attention and focus. They might be very impulsive and more keen on starting something new than following it through. They might have a problem with sitting still or remaining inactive for any period of time."

Two funny things: First, ESTP is the diametrical opposite of what I get when I take a pen-and-paper version of the Myers-Briggs test (strong INFJ, so much so a career counselor once expressed amazement how closely my answers fit the "type"). So am I projecting a different personality to the world than what I actually have? Or is my judgment of myself faulty?

Second: that second paragraph of the description is actually pretty accurate. Though maybe not the sitting-still part.

I'd love to see other bloggers do this...

Yeah, pretty much, though I'm not entirely sure about "the world needs the contribution of people with brains like yours." Or maybe it's that it's my impression that the world THINKS it doesn't need them...

Your result for How geeky are you?...

Laboratory Geek

65% Geeky, 79% Cranial and 45% Introverted!

You scored 65% Geeky, 79% Cranial and 45% Introverted. You are quirky, intelligent, and like to fly solo. You're too curious to live a hermit's life and would much rather be working on some sort of interesting project though be it alone.

You might find it hard to connect with other people or you might have anxiety in social situations. It may be easier to avoid people as much as possible, but this will only limit the possibilities in your life. The world needs the contribution of people with brains like yours! So what to do? Baby steps. Whenever something feel uncomfortable socially, it's usually the right thing to do. Step outside your comfort zone a bit, take a deep breath and don't be afraid to ask the people around you for help.

I truly hope you enjoyed the test as much as I enjoyed making it! I always welcome email comments/suggestions! Thanks for taking it!

Lynn referred to this, and dragonknitter actually did it, so here's my version.

The Omnivore's Hundred is a list of foods the gastronomic Andrew Wheeler thinks everyone should try at least once in their lives. (on his website he has wikipedia links for the unfamiliar things, if you don't know what they are).

The rules of the meme: bold those you have tried, strikethrough those you wouldn't eat on a bet.

And because I can't resist, I'll have to add comments here and there.

1. Venison Venison sausage is delicious; roast venison is OK. I might not be so likely to eat it now, though, what with the concerns about Chronic Wasting Disease. (Same with elk.)

2. Nettle tea

3. Huevos rancheros (I'd eat it on a bet, but it's not something I've ever felt moved to order in a restaurant. That's too much stuff too early in the morning for my digestion)

4. Steak tartare (only if I knew the cow it came from and the chef who prepared it.)

5. Crocodile

6. Black pudding (Sorry, the thought of congealed blood turns my stomach)

7. Cheese fondue. Mmmm, cheese!

8. Carp

9. Borscht(I plan to try this this fall, given the fact that I now like certain beet dishes)

10. Baba ghanoush

11. Calamari Mmmm, squid! I knew someone who used this as a "test food" - if he could take a woman out on a date, order calimari, and she didn't recoil in horror when she found out what it was, he considered that to be a promising sign.

12. Pho

13. PB&J sandwich Though I prefer plain peanut butter.

14. Aloo gobi (Probably not; cauliflower and I are not friends)

15. Hot dog from a street cart

16. Epoisses Yes, it's cheese, but it's supposedly pungent, so no.

17. Black truffle Fungus allergies.

18. Fruit wine made from something other than grapes Migraines from alcohol.

19. Steamed pork buns. Years ago, at a Chinese buffet.

20. Pistachio ice cream (Sounds good to me.)

21. Heirloom tomatoes Yes, please.

22. Fresh wild berries

23. Foie gras (I'd eat it maybe once, but it doesn't seem like something I'd like.)

24. Rice and beans

25. Brawn, or head cheese No, because I know how it's prepared.

26. Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper Issues with hot foods.

27. Dulce de leche

28. Oysters. No: issues with raw-ness, and also, after dissecting a clam in college biology, I think of all the little livers and gonads and things inside the unfortunate critters.

29. Baklava. I regret that there is no Greek Orthodox church near me now; the one in Akron used to do weekly "gyros lunches" (good homemade gyros for cheap) and they had wonderful pastries at Christmastime.

30. Bagna cauda

31. Wasabi peas I've eaten them but wouldn't again.)

32. Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl

33. Salted lassi (I might. It does not contain anything known to be repulsive to me)

34. Sauerkraut My mom made our own when I was a child. I like red cabbage
better but sauerkraut is OK by me.

35. Root beer float

36. Cognac with a fat cigar No alcohol, and definitely no tobacco.

37. Clotted cream tea

38. Vodka jelly (sounds repulsive...is this like a jello shot?)

39. Gumbo

40. Oxtail

41. Curried goat

42. Whole insects. No. I can't. Sorry. I know I'm being very mono-cultural here but I just can't do it.

43. Phaal "Hottest form of curry"? I don't think I could take it.

44. Goat’s milk Not something I'd want again. It makes good fudge though.

45. Malt whisky from a bottle worth £60/$120 or more. The alcohol thing, again.

46. Fugu. Something that could kill me if prepared wrong? I won't eat poke salad either.

47. Chicken tikka masala

48. Eel

49. Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut Never hot n fresh, though.

50. Sea urchin (Mmmmmmaybe. I don't know)

51. Prickly pear. And they make lovely jelly.

52. Umeboshi

53. Abalone

54. Paneer (Fresh cheese? Sounds OK by me)

55. McDonald’s Big Mac Meal (I'd eat it on a bet but it's not something I'd ever really want).

56. Spaetzle Mmmm, yes. I've even MADE spaetzle.

57. Dirty gin martini

58. Beer above 8% ABV

59. Poutine (Actually, I'd kind of like to try it. Once.)

60. Carob chips They are really not as bad as some people make them out to be. The secret is not to try to pretend they are chocolate but to appreciate them as a flavor in their own right.

61. S’mores Mmmmm. Yes please.

62. Sweetbreads. There's a poem about these, I think by Ogden Nash. I have no desire to eat the thymus of a calf.

63. Kaolin (I've taken Kaopectate so I guess you could technically say "yes" to this for me, but it's not something I'd eat intentionally.)

64. Currywurst

65. Durian . It's supposed to smell terrible. I don't think I could get past the smell.

66. Frogs’ legs. Yes indeedy. When I interviewed for my current job, they took me out to dinner at this steakhouse. One of the men - now one of my colleagues - ordered these to pass around. I figured, "Well, I might as well show them I'm game" and tried one. They're really not something I would ever eat again.

67. Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake

68. Haggis. Sorry, even with my Scots heritage, I can't do that.

69. Fried plantain

70. Chitterlings, or andouillette. No. Knowing where it comes from makes it impossible for me to eat it.

71. Gazpacho

72. Caviar and blini

73. Louche absinthe

74. Gjetost, or brunost )Not yet, but I would love to try some. I've just never seen it for sale.)

75. Roadkill (probably not, though I do know people who have "salvaged" deer that got hit and most of it was still OK.)

76. Baijiu (Sounds like "white lightnin'" but with a prettier name.)

77. Hostess Fruit Pie. Yes, alas.

78. Snail. "Visceral mass." No thank you.

79. Lapsang souchong

80. Bellini (Oh, heck. That one sounds good enough that I'd probably be willing to risk the migraine.)

81. Tom yum (Nothing in that sounds like it would offend me, I've just never had the chance to try it.)

82. Eggs Benedict

83. Pocky

84. Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant

85. Kobe beef

86. Hare

87. Goulash

88. Flowers Candied violets.

89. Horse (I am striking this out because I would not eat it willingly. If it were "eat horse or starve," OK. But not willingly. I read too many "horse books" as a child to be comfortable with eating ol' Sugarfoot.)

90. Criollo chocolate

91. Spam

92. Soft shell crab

93. Rose harissa Probably too hot for me.

94. Catfish. Meh. Not a fan.

95. Mole poblano

96. Bagel and lox

97. Lobster Thermidor

98. Polenta

99. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee

100. Snake (Yeah, I'd try it. Probably tastes like chicken.)

Yes, I am extremely picky and there are many things I would never even consider trying. But I'm actually surprised by the number of things on that list I HAVE eaten.

Heh....one of those quiz things claiming to get at your "deep self"

Monk / Nun
Monk / Nun
Take Your Secret Self 1 Step Beyond today!
Created with Rum and Monkey's Personality Test Generator.

Going 1 step beyond I am all about spiritual truth, bread and bad haircuts. For me the best part of the day is spent in quiet meditation where I don't have to worry about my big ears and people laughing at me. No one really understands the depth of my soul, which is in here somewheres. I study, I work, I feed deer and am kind to little bunnies. I am making this a better world by shutting myself away from real life. Somehow. I am certain life's questions can be answered by sleeping on hard things and chanting.

Uh-huh. Right. Though I would feed deer and be kind to little bunnies, given the chance. But not so much with the sleeping on hard things.

Innnnnnteresting...

Given all the 1930s-era "vintage embroidery patterns" I've been looking at, this little test intrigued me:

73

As a 1930s wife, I am
Superior

Take the test!

Of course, there are an awful lot of questions presupposing one has a husband or children on it, so I answered the "husband" on as I thought I would react. (Yes, I would laugh at his jokes, even if they're silly. Though not if they were racist or sexist or put someone else down. And yes, I'd help out in his office if it really became necessary).

I answered the "children" ones assuming that this hypothetical union had no children, which may have lowered my score somewhat.

But there are some things on there - for example, reminding him that it's her money they're living on - that I'd argue are just kind of bad form across the board, and therefore are Not Done whether or not it makes you a "good" spouse. (and would be even if the shoe were on the other foot - I would find it extremely unpleasant to be reminded every time I ran out to the grocery that it's by virtue of his effort that we manage to keep body and soul together).

(Edited for clarity: I think answering a "yes" to "reminds him it's your money you're living on" probably LOWERS your score. What I'm saying is, you should avoid saying junk like that for more reasons than it just making you a "better" spouse)

Some of the other ones, like "is a good cook" and "bothers to get dressed for breakfast" are just kind of givens, things that I think contribute to a civilized life whether or not one is part of a couple.

Still, there's an odd consolation in being told that I'd be a reasonable "catch."

...just call me Penn (because I'm too talky to be Teller).

If you don't like finding out "how stuff works" and prefer to believe that these internet quizzes are magic, don't read this post.

'Cos I've parsed out how that "secret meaning of your name" quiz works, based on seeing it on other's blogs.

First off, the results for my given name:

What Erica Means

You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone.

You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together.

At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.

You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.

You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing.

You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long.

You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are very open. You communicate well, and you connect with other people easily.

You are a naturally creative person. Ideas just flow from your mind.

A true chameleon, you are many things at different points in your life. You are very adaptable.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.

You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.

You have the classic "Type A" personality.

First - note that there are five "chunks" of text, set off by extra spaces. And five letters in my name.

Then - that second "chunk"? NOT ME. Not unless "rebel" means "person who follows the rules" (though these days, it seems that following the rules and the conventions of etiquette maybe ARE a rebellious act sometimes). (and R is for Rebel, maybe?)

Okay, here's my blog-name:

What Fillyjonk Means

You are loving, compassionate, and ruled by your feelings.

You are able to be a foundation for other people... but you still know how to have fun.

Sometimes your emotions weigh you down, but you generally feel free from them.

You are relaxed, chill, and very likely to go with the flow.

You are light hearted and accepting. You don't get worked up easily.

Well adjusted and incredibly happy, many people wonder what your secret to life is.

You are a free spirit, and you resent anyone who tries to fence you in.

You are unpredictable, adventurous, and always a little surprising.

You may miss out by not settling down, but you're too busy having fun to care.

You are fair, honest, and logical. You are a natural leader, and people respect you.

You never give up, and you will succeed... even if it takes you a hundred tries.

You are rational enough to see every part of a problem. You are great at giving other people advice.

You are well rounded, with a complete perspective on life.

You are solid and dependable. You are loyal, and people can count on you.

At times, you can be a bit too serious. You tend to put too much pressure on yourself.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.

You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.

You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

You are a seeker of knowledge, and you have learned many things in your life.

You are also a keeper of knowledge - meaning you don't spill secrets or spread gossip.

People sometimes think you're snobby or aloof, but you're just too deep in thought to pay attention to them.

Notice anything?

The third letter of my given name is "i." The second letter of my blog-nick-name is "i". Same information in the third paragraph of my "fortune" for my given name and the second paragraph of my blog-nick-name (besides - if this were really based on "real" name-meanings, the system would choke on "Fillyjonk.")

So what they have is a letter by letter code, and just translate each letter of your name (skipping repeated letters) into the paragraph that that letter "codes" for.

(I leave it as an Exercise For The Reader to go to the site and enter "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ" as their name...)

Barnum ahoy!

(actually, I think this one fits me pretty well:)

You Are a Walnut

You are down to earth and genuine.

Responsible and practical, you are a grown up in all aspects of your life.

You probably eat a healthy diet and get enough exercise.

And while you're not wild, you're not boring either. You're actually very deep and interesting.
