Got a call about 10 minutes ago from a cop in my mom's town: "She's with me, she's fine. I'm going to drive her home; she got in a couple little accidents and her car needs to be towed. We aren't issuing any citations though" (which suggests to me she did not hit another car but maybe hit a guardrail or something)
The cop said he'd have to put in a "driver's license retest" for her and I told him I approved of that. He also said - in confidence - "something I saw in my grandma when she got older, was she sometimes would get UTIs and would get very confused" and I said "yes, I am going to pressure her to get it checked out, I was wondering about that" but I do also worry she might be having a bit of age-related cognitive decline (but maybe going to the doctor can reveal that too).
but holy cow. I just started crying on the phone when the cop said she was okay, and then I apologized, and he said "no, I completely understand" and this was about the worst evening I've had in a very long time.
I'm glad it came out better than I feared,. I would have PREFERRED that she just pulled over and asked for help (before the first accident) or that she didn't get lost at all, but.....you can't have everything.
