Up early, waiting

I woke up this morning about 6 am, found a text from the GC (sent at almost 11 pm last night): "Remember guys will be there early and have a trailer in your driveway, move your car out to the street if you don't want to be blocked in"

I dressed in record time and did that

they're still not here and now I wonder if "guys with a trailer" is actually gonna be the city dropping off the demolition dumpster he said he wanted to get for the old shingles and siding. I suspect my emotions are gonna be.....somewhat jerked around (through no fault of his own; I tend to be impatient and want things NOW) during all of this.

Anyway, once my breakfast settles I'm going to try mowing the backyard, it needs it.

And this is 2 days late, but Roger did it, so I will again: This week's Sunday Stealing

 1. If you could live in a house shaped like anything what would it be?

Honestly at this point I don't care as long as it has a sound roof and walls and no mice coming in (I am having problems with that again). Something low-maintenance shaped.

2. What do you think is in outer space?

A lot of nothing, some stars, maybe a little other life but it won't be little green men or ALFs, it'll probably be more like bacteria or jellyfish.

3. Where is the most wonderful place you’ve ever been?

Hawaii was pretty nice. Not the cities which are a lot like any American city but the natural areas and the parks, and yeah, maybe the small towns.

4. If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?

Frankly, as a woman over 40, I feel invisible a lot of the time already. It's not great. Pass.

5. What is the worst smell in the world?

I agree with Roger that cigarettes are bad, but living in a  place where MMJ is legal and apparently very commonly used - skunky weed is WORSE. (I wound up waiting in line at Lowe's yesterday behind someone who smelled a bit like skunky weed and a bit like grease that had been left out in the sun and it was BAD)

6. If you could, what animal would you be?

A cat, as long as it was a cat that lived with a family that loved it. Or a dog, in the same circumstances.

7. What is the greatest thing ever invented?

Language. (I was going to say "the printing press" but without language there's not much use having one)

8. What is your favorite word? Why?

I don't know that I have a *favorite* word. I have a big vocabulary and take pride in using the precise word for a situation...

9. Who is someone in history that you’d like to be friends with? Why?

Well, Jesus, of course. But I also think it would be cool to at least meet Beatrix Potter, or Sojourner Truth, or Bach

10. If your pet could talk, what would it say?

I don't have a pet.....so it would say nothing?

11. Were there dinosaurs on Noah’s ark?

No. If something like a literal ark happened (there's some evidence the legend is based on the flooding in the Black Sea), it would have been millions of years after the dinosaurs went extinct

12. What makes you cry?

Being overwhelmed by stuff in life. Being lonesome. All the awfulness some people get up to.

13. Have you ever played a joke on someone? What was it?

I probably have but can't think of a specific one right now. I was complicit in the students removing and "stealing" the tires off a colleague's pickup truck as a prank some years back (I distracted him in his office by talking to him long enough for them to do it)

14. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do?

Dealing with everything in the wake of my dad's death. Probably the single thing that stands out is when we went to the funeral home and the director asked my mom "do you want us to cremate him in the pajamas he had on, or take them off and wash them and give them back to you" and she looked at me in desperation and I realized that at that point she could not make one more decision, so I just weakly said "leave them on him" (partly because it felt like a "dignity" thing, partly because I didn't want to have to drive back there to pick them up).

I talk about not being "really grown up" but if I weren't really grown up before, I grew up in that moment.

15. What is the most important appliance in your house?

Right now? The airconditioner. The refrigerator is pretty important, too, for keeping food safe to eat. The most enjoyable one for me is my sewing machine.

Update: a Van Full of Guys just pulled up, so I guess this is happening. No trailer as yet but maybe it's on its way

One of the participants used his favorite curse word (4 letters, starting with F). I don't really have one, but my friend who I've known since KINDERGARTEN has one (7 letters, starting with A). I LOVE how she says it. George Carlin rightly noted, re that word, that how proximate they are to you defines how much of an A they are.
