* We are now under a "heat advisory." It's supposed to be lifted Saturday morning, so I'm thinking maybe doing Saturday morning as my fieldwork day - and coming in here and working on Friday morning. (I have bees to identify and soil to sort through).
* Because of the heat, I started putting my hair up in a little bun again. This is not difficult for me to do as I have thick, somewhat coarse, curly hair, and it tends to stay once I do something with it - I just put it in the usual ponytail, wind the "tail" part around the base, and then secure it with a couple of hairpins. It feels a lot better having my hair up off the nape of my neck when it's this hot.
* I look at old pictures of myself when I had VERY short hair (high school - I was a swimmer and so I wore what was an updated version of the flapper's "shingle cut") and I don't like the way I looked with short hair, so I doubt I will ever get it cut short again. (Because of the extreme curliness, mid-length hair is actually kind of uncontrollable - it goes into a giant dandelion puff). But it's nice to have the option to put it up.
* I also found out that a bun is very practical for labwork where you have to wear a face mask (as I do for working with the soil - allergies). The top elastic of the mask runs over the top of where the bun is, and the bottom elastic runs under where the bottom of the bun is. No more getting my hair caught in the elastics or having a hard time putting the mask on! I should probably keep a few hairpins in a drawer over here for times when I'm NOT wearing a bun but need to use a face mask....
* I suppose some people might feel self-conscious wearing their hair in a bun (there are some funny associations people have with buns - the Amish, ballet dancers, that sourpuss old math teacher...) but I don't. It's practical, I think it looks kind of good on me (I have a long and somewhat slender neck and I think that's something that helps a bun to look good). And anyway - it's better than having the hair all down on my neck when it's this warm.
*Last night was a meeting (though mostly a good-news meeting - the monthly Board Meeting at church, and it turns out our borked air conditioning is mainly going to be paid for by insurance, as they determined a power surge was what fried the units). I have another one tonight and I'm not terribly happy about it (I teach 2 1/2 hours of lecture this morning, teach a 4 1/2 hour lab this afternoon, and then have a meeting at 6:30). I get that that was the only time other people could meet, but wharrgarbl.
* Here's hoping they don't shut down the airconditioning "for the weekend" at noon today like they often do on Thursdays....
* I think Friday, unless it's really really awful hot and I'm too worn out after I walk out of here from doing a couple hours of research stuff, I might drive over to Pottsboro and try out the year-old (or so) Brookshire's grocery that is there. (Supposedly Sherman is supposed to get one in a few years. They described it as an "upscale" grocery on the semi-local news, but I don't know....I was briefly in one in, I think it was Point? and it didn't seem unusually "upscale" to me. Then again, anything that's not a Wal-Mart Supercenter might seem kind of upscale....)
