In some work-related news:
the data for the summer research (with my research student) is looking good. Like, REALLY good. There's a very interesting time-progression in forest tree-layer change with time-since-disturbance. The student is also going through reams of site records kept by the Fish and Wildlife Service to find out times of disturbances, floods, time since the area stopped being farmed...this has the makings of a very good paper. The other nice thing is that the student is someone who gets interested in stuff and just runs with it - doesn't come to me every fifteen minutes asking "should I do this with the data?" - he just does it to see what happens.
I told him we should consider submitting the paper we plan to write to a bigger-circulation (i.e., more prestigious) journal than the one we previously considered. It might get rejected, but, hey, we can always go back to our original plan then.
I'm enjoying teaching again. (I really do love teaching Biostats; having that class first thing in the morning makes my whole day good. Wait, is it really weird that I love teaching a statistics class?). Part of the reason is that my Biostats class is mostly people I know from other classes, it's a smaller class, and people are pretty vocal. The other two classes - they're either still scared or they're not talkers, which is sort of too bad. I have the first Ecology lab today, that might loosen that class up a little.
