adapt, improvise, overcome

I was working on the red mitts for my mom while giving an exam today. I got up to the point where you start the thumb gusset, where it's helpful to have stitch markers (so you don't have to count on every increase row). And I realized I had one marker for the gusset, but the second one must have fallen out of my bag somewhere.

I looked about for something to serve in place of it, even tried to find the opposite end of the ball to cut the tail off and just make a tied loop. (I also looked for a paperclip, which I have also used in a pinch). Couldn't find anything, then I realized I did have a ring shaped thing:

My old high school class ring, which I've worn for close to 40 years now (I got it as a sophomore). So I used that. I just now swapped it out for a stitch marker here at home on the grounds that I'd panic about "where's my ring" if I didn't do it tonight (when I got home I put on a jade ring I had, so my hand didn't feel naked).

I also got the International cards and the CPAAG exchange cards out, and the exams graded. This weekend I'll do cards for other folks - so if you want a card, there's still time to let me know/give me your address. I do need to get a few more.
