Thursday evening things

 * Originally I was not gonna have a post tonight; AAUW was supposed to have their annual dinner out, but there's heavy weather supposed to come in and a couple of the members had family emergencies, and the restaurant was just as happy to move the group's reservation to the next week, so here I am.

* Today is "Star Wars Day," one of those sort-of-invented holidays. Because it's May 4th, get it? as in May the Fourth be with you?

(And yes, everyone raised in particular Christian denominations want to respond with either "And also with you" or "And with your spirit." I KNOW I've already told the story about how as a child I apparently envisioned The Force as being something akin to the Holy Spirit, because when my small brother asked me - after we had seen the first movie - if I thought the Force was with us, I responded (as my mom says) wholeheartedly "Oh, I HOPE so!" - she seemed to think I was not merely saying it to pretend or to make my brother happy but that I really meant it).

Anyway, May the Fourth be With You:

(That's a Chewie Squishmallow, purchased a few years back, IIRC as my "reward" for being brave and getting my flu vaccination)

I like Star Wars Day, though. It's a low effort holiday, it's fun, it's a way to connect with other people who like the property on some level (I am mostly a fan of the original three movies; I kind of lost the thread with the 1999 prequel and haven't really watched much of the newer stuff other than, I think, The Force Awakens, and that I didn't watch very closely (my brother brought the dvd with him one Thanksgiving and I was doing something else while he played it)

* At some point I need to get the volition to set up my swift and ball winder and wind off a few of the hanks of yarn I've bought - I have the one for the Octarine socks, and I have another one for just-simple socks from KnitPicks "Static" line - the recent colorways they have cleverly given "hint" names from vintage TV shows. The two I have are "Grace Brothers" (shades of blue, but not any colors from Mrs. Slocombe's hair) and the one I want to start soon, "John-Boy," which is brown and purple and kind of reminiscent in the colors of an old plaid shirt.

(I bought it partly because I like the colors but also I admit I enjoy watching re-runs of The Waltons when I find it on. Yes, at times it's corny and hokey and maybe dated, but there's also something wholesome about it that you don't see as much in tv shows now. I *just* remember having watched it as a kid, but I don't remember much from the episodes)

* But for now - if they can ever go back to regular programming if the weather quiets down (There are tornadoes far to the west of us, and if they track like they normally track, they will miss us), I want to work on the current simple socks made of an ombre yarn. I finished the first one, and have just one or two rounds on the cuff of the second before I start the knit-plain for the leg.

* Tomorrow is my last exam. Two people took it already - baseball players who had to be gone. I haven't graded theirs yet; I wanted to do them all at once to be more fair. If I can get those graded, I can total up those grades and submit them and then I will be done.

Saturday is graduation. First time I'll be at one (except for a spring 2021, IIRC, outdoor brief ceremony where we all sat far apart and had to wear masks).

Then I'm done for a little while. I have a week before I leave to go see my mom; I'm hoping in that time to acquire a good birthday present for her (though I suspect a trip to Chickasaw for me may be out; it's supposed to rain every day). I would like to maybe get down to Denison one day. Probably not Monday; it's not atypical for small stores to be closed Sundays and Mondays, on the grounds that everyone needs a 2 day weekend but Saturday is too profitable a day to give up. I might find something good there.
