Some more flowers

Last night was CWF, so I really didn't do much other than work and go to that.

Today, I *almost* finished the lecture over grasses (One more! Only one more: the "other monocots" and I'll have finished it)

But tomorrow, I lead the herbaceous vegetation lab out at the local reservoir. I wanted to go out there to (a) be sure they hadn't mowed the heck out of it or (b) burned it, and I wanted an idea of what was flowering.

Oh, lots of stuff.

Some blue-eyed grass: Sisyrinchium campestre. At least I think it's campestre.

It's a pretty little thing. IIRC, it's in the iris family. It's everywhere around here.

There's some Castilleja indivisa, Indian paintbrush, but not as much as in previous years. This is an easily-recognized plant; there's nothing else flowering this time that is this color.

I originally thought this might be a fumitory (Fumariaceae)  but now I'm pretty sure - after seeing the buds on it - that it's actually prairie parsnip (Polytaenia nuttallii). The leaves look *kind* of similar but the parsnip has larger leaves, and the flowering heads are very different (different families - prairie parsnip is in the carrot family, Apiaceae

"We have BOTH kinds of false wild indigo here: purple and cream!" (okay, niche Blues Brothers reference, but). The purple one has bonus wood bee (I think that's a wood bee rather than a bumblebee, it has no pile on its abdomen). These are Baptisia australs (purple) and probably Baptisia bracteata (white).

The good news about this is also this preps me for the systematic botany lab - we're going there for that one, too. (there were more plants than just the ones I photographed - these were the showiest ones, or in the case of the prairie parsnip, I wanted to double-check against a book and some verified online photos).

So hopefully Friday I won't have to stay over as long, and maybe Saturday I can actually take the day off this week....
