So "G5" (Generation 5) had been being teased since G4 (the one I got interested in) ended. Finally now they have designs out - there's a v. cute Pegasus but apparently she is a minor character (no name announced for her yet, and it's possible she's only going to be in the "movie" that's coming out and not the eventual show.
And then there's a so-called Earth Pony (I always think that sounds weird, like how we called plain milk at school "white milk" to differentiate it from "chocolate"). She's cute, too, and looks like she's maybe a little nerdy/clever pony.
And then there's this
That's the unicorn, named Izzy (so I guess they're going with more humanoid names this time?). Apparently this still is from a trip to the pegasus castle, and they don't trust unicorns, and that's a magic inhibitor - they are literally Nerfing her. (Kind of like the baby goats with the pool noodles put on their horns so they can't butt people).
<Marge Simpson Voice>"I just think it's neat"</Marge Simpson Voice>
I guess I'm not alone because one of the Pony tumblrs had that image, followed by:
I'm not sure how I feel about the basic plotline: apparently it's set far in the future, long after the Mane Six from before have departed this material plane, and apparently the three pony "races" (pegasus, unicorn, Earth pony) have split up and there are three nations and....well, that same Pony tumblr called it "baby's first dystopia!" and yeah, while I suppose you have no story without conflict, not sure how I feel about nations that don't trust each other and possible intraspecies racism among ponies. (A fan-fiction trope used in some Pony stories was that unicorns thought themselves the "master race," and that pegasus were dumb jocks, and Earth ponies were rusticated hicks....I admit I don't like that kind of thing; it's one thing to have ONE character be a dumb jock type, or a snob, or whatever, but to make a whole group that way....not sure we need that right now).
Like I said, I also have issues of "this is the dystopian future after the Bearers of Harmony died" being an uncomfortable concept to those who knew and loved Generation 4.
And also: it's on Netflix, womp womp. Though I said "okay, maybe this is what gets me to pay for a Netflix subscription," because the ponies are undeniably cute, but I admit I kind of dislike how a lot of companies are either buying up content or, (like Disney Plus), putting their really good and new stuff behind an EXTRA paywall (if you have cable, you are already paying, but now if you want the good stuff, you need to pay a little more - yes, it's possible to cancel cable, but if I did that, I would get zero local news, and sometimes you need that).
Then again: the image of Izzy there with a tennis ball on her horn is *almost* enough to make me go "yeah, okay, I'll join the Netflix Collective"
I guess it's not out until fall so I have a little while to consider it.
