I admit, this is not my favorite Christmas song ever; I've heard some pretty bad renditions of it, and also, since it's fairly modern, it feels somehow....ahistorical? Or maybe the fact that it's clearly *adding on* to the Nativity story as told in Luke, that might be why I disliked it as a child...
But I like this version.
Partly because, yes, it's a weird juxtaposition, but at the same time: two men, different generations, very different music styles, are able to (at least appear to) work well together and harmonize on the song.
And somehow there's something hopeful in that, and in keeping with the spirit of Christmas.
(And yes, I know there's a pretty shot for shot perfect parody, which I always thought was SNL but is apparently Funny or Die? "Crosby" mispronouncing "Bowie" (so it's like the one from the Alamo) is always kind of funny)
