RIP, Dave Brubeck

A week ago, I commented on Dave Brubeck's arrangement of Jingle Bells, and how it made a fairly basic tune interesting.

Well, Mr. Brubeck passed away today. He almost made it to 92.

But it sounds like he had a long and good life, that he got along well with his family. And he left behind work of lasting value. I think that's about the best we can hope for in this life: to love and be loved, to do something that will outlive us here on earth. (And I do believe that Mr. Brubeck has now joined the heavenly choir, and is probably getting to show the angels a thing or two about time signatures.)

And I'm sure his music will live on. Not just the pieces that use "odd" time signatures, but pieces like his version of Joy to the World:



and also some of his sacred works (My parents have sung one of the choral pieces he wrote in their church choir. I do not remember which one it was)
