Random McKinney things

Just thought of these:

1. Two women, walking behind me, talking loudly. "That's just HER" one said to the other. "She's the Queen of Pinatas." (I'm not sure I want to know).

2. The Hipsters have apparently discovered McKinney. Several of the restaurants that had outdoor seating wound up with tables full of guys in skinny pants and flannel shirts buttoned to the neck (? Is that a new hipster thing?) and women with those heavy-framed glasses.

Which means I can say:

3. The quilt shops were still pretty busy. Like I said, that makes me happy, to see them thriving. (Though a number of other businesses seemed to have more customers than I've seen the last few times I went down there).

4. Sadly, it looks like "Smitten" has once again been squeezed out of its space - it's now in a tiny sliver of a shop with far less stuff than it once had (and it's now called "The Flea," perhaps in recognition of its small space). A salon now occupies its former location. (One business owner once told me the city owned many of the historic buildings and apparently they had the power to tell businesses to move or close if they found a client that they liked better/paid higher rent/that they thought would bring in more tax revenue). Also, Heirlooms is moving - I hope the building they move to will be equal in size or larger.

(It seems of late, not just in McKinney but in a few other towns I've been in, including mine, that antique/vintage shops seem to be going away, which makes me sad. I don't know if it's that people aren't buying, or if it's that all the "good stuff" winds up going to the big cities where people might have more money to spend on it, or if online auctions have eaten up a lot of the business. I've never done online auctions; when I go antique shopping I am usually browsing rather than hunting, wanting the serendipity of finding something cool that I wasn't thinking of, rather than having to do a directed online search for a specific thing...)

I love Hipster Kitty.

And yep, flannel shirts, skinny jeans, heavy-framed glasses...you might just be a hipster.
