Things I want

Sometimes I go through a period of having vague wants for certain things. Sometimes I fulfill those wants, sometimes I don't (because of the cost), sometimes I want things that aren't even available. Here are a few current wants:

1. One of those old-fashioned wooden pointers like teachers used to have. I like the thought of being able to tap something I've written or drawn on the board and hear that satisfying "click" of wood against chalkboard. I don't even know if they make those oldstyle pointers any more. (Laser pointers are very unsatisfying in that regard, and also, if my hands are shaky, the dot jumps all over the place). I also sort of want, but have no reason to use, one of those giant compasses that holds chalk that my grade-school geometry teachers used to have to draw perfect circles on the chalkboard.

2. This t-shirt ("Twilight Sparkle uses LECTURE..... It's super effective!") I probably won't buy it, though, as a Fluttershy t-shirt is winging its way (hah, see what I did there?) to me, and also, I know I'd never be quite brave enough to wear it out of the house. But the t-shirt does make me laugh. (I actually SAID, "Oh my gosh, I AM Twilight Sparkle" when she declared in a recent episode, "I'm going to do what I do best: LECTURE HER.")

3. For my house to be clean. I'm going to have to make time to do this, maybe this weekend.

4. A newer, smaller, more megapixels digital camera. I keep holding off because (a) anything over $100 is a Big Expenditure for me, and (b) I worry about getting one that's not as good as it could be, or won't do what I want. I don't have a camera store near me or I'd go and ask someone there for advice.

5. Another bookshelf, or some kind of better book-storage system. (I swan, one of these days I'm going to have to invest in compact storage for my books. That is, if the foundation of my house could take it. I know our library had to have some engineering studies done before they invested in theirs...)

An excellent photo store B&N not only have big selection of cameras and decent prices, they have all kinds of free tutorials and informative articles on their site

Disclaimer: yes, i bought my current camera there, in their physical store on 10th avenue, but that was 7 years ago; for all I know - they became even better than then.

Couldn't you make a pointer? I'm thinking you could get a dowel (maybe half inch in size) from a hardware store or some place like Home Depot or Lowes. Not sure what you could use for the tip but I'm sure there must be something out there that could either be glued to it or perhaps screwed on. Perhaps something in the upholstery screw/brad section would work.

on the compact storage, I think pretty much ANYONE who get it has to do the engineering/load bearing studies. Our corporate archives have them and it was a biiiiiiiiig deal, even though they relocated to the sub-ground floor.

For what it's worth, I am really super happy with my Sony Cybershot. I have had it for several years and I'm sure there are more advanced models out there now.

First off, happy time change!

Here's a place that sells pointers like I remember my profs using for a pretty reasonable price: http://www.teacherstorehouse.com/product2.asp?product_key=88397&n=Pointer+with+Rubber+Tip&order_key=&goto=default%2Easp%3Forder%3D%26pagenum%3D1%26type%5Fkey%3D2%26classification%5Fkey%3D39%26subject%5Fkey%3D%26language%5Fkey%3D%26season%5Fkey%3D%26grade%5Fkey%3D%26product%5Fcategory%5Fkey%3D

Or, there are also pointers like Charlotte said, with a little wooden bead at the tip. (Heck, that could be fun: have a bead with a saying painted on it in small.)

I'd go for it. (If I were teaching this year, I would have gotten myself a wooden sword to use as a pointer.)

As for a camera, I have a Canon Powershot SD1200. It's been replaced by a SD1300, which is about $150 on Amazon. I love mine to pieces; it has a great macro setting and took thousands of pictures well this summer. camelcamelcamel.com lets you set up price watches on Amazon, and they say that this camera has been about $100 in the past. My guess is that it'll drop down again there for the holidays as they roll out the new cameras.
