His name is Tuzki. Apparently he is some kind of little Internet thing (I originally thought he was a mascot of a broadcaster in Asia, but I see now it was actually developed by someone at Beijing Broadcast Institute, and not Beijing Broadcasting, or whatever I thought).
Apparently the little rabbit is more used as emoticons than anything. (And used by Motorola in ads. And used by Greenpeace to talk about GM food.)
I don't know. I just find something kind of appealing about the simplicity of the character...the face really doesn't have an expression, so you can imagine whatever expression you like on it. I had originally thought of doing a different face, with a nose and whiskers and those "anime smiling eyes" (arched lines to symbolize someone smiling but with their eyes closed) but then decided it wouldn't really be a Tuzki with a different face, so I went with the very simple minimalist design.
The original pattern - which was a free download on Ravelry, but can also be found as a link here called for "four ply" yarn (which generally connotes a fingering weight) and a smaller hook. I used a worsted and I think an E hook to make this. (And the worsted weight acrylic wore a small blister on my left index finger where I was carrying the yarn, ugh. I never had that problem before.)
