Finished the second section of the Song of Hiawatha shawl:
Today is Assessment Day. That means we are expected to cancel all our morning classes so the Juniors can go and take what is basically the ACT all over again, to see if they're learning anything. So I'm here in my office (I promised to be in, bleah, because I'm giving an exam Friday and I wanted people to be able to stop by and ask questions if they had any. No one else is in, and upon reflection, probably none of the students will make a special trip in when they can catch me in lab this afternoon. That is, if lab meets: it's supposed to be a field lab and it might storm.)
But, oh well. It's Socktober! I brought the self-patterning socks with me and have the door a-l-m-o-s-t closed so no one can easily see me knitting while I read journal articles (Yes, I am working, but I am also knitting. It is hard to explain to non-knitters. It is probably hard even to explain to knitters who are not as obsessed as I am. But yes, it does help me concentrate.) I'm almost up to the heel flap on the second sock.

Very nice shawl. What does the new pattern represent?
I find that I read best if I'm knitting something simple. I'm not as likely to fidget, so I concentrate more on the work. I'm actually knitting right now, trying to finish up a sock, as I proofread a test and look at blogs.
