No idea how old either of these items are; I'm guessing sometime in the 1960s or 70s, seeing as, by the electronics-heavy era, most of this kind of giftware manufacturing had moved from Japan to elsewhere. Both of them have stickers indicating they were made in Japan.
First of all - this is something that came from my grandmother's house. I remember it sitting on top of her refrigerator and her using it to hold a spare pair of eyeglasses (the "cheeks" of the owl form a little shelf where you can prop glasses). It reminds me of her. When I was helping my mom look for something in the basement, we ran across this - it was one of the random things she got when my grandma's household was broken up.
I guess I had more memories attached to it than my mom did; I'm assuming my grandma got it after my mom was grown and gone. But I remember it from Grandma's house:
Actually, my mom said she thought it might have been my grandfather's, but he died when I was a baby so I never knew him. At any rate, I asked her, if she didn't have a big attachment to it, if I could have it (as I said, it reminded me of my grandmother's kitchen) and she said yes.
My glasses don't really fit easily on it (at least not with the bows folded, which is what I usually do when I take them off) but I still might put it on my bedside table to hold my glasses at night. (I'm pretty much always wearing them other times).
The second thing, I bought in Mineola at one of the antique shops. At first I wondered if I had room for another one of these, but it was only $10 and also, I realized I couldn't resist having an analogue of "Sugarcube Corners" in My Own Private Ponyville:
It's a cookie jar in the shape of a cookie shop! It's a little bit bigger in scale than the "house" teapots are, but it still works, and it does please me to have this, seeing as I have the little figures of the Cake family (who run Sugarcube Corners) and Pinkie Pie (who sort of apprentices there)
Again, no idea how old this is but I'm guessing maybe 1960s. It has a sticker on the bottom that says "WALES" (in fancy script) and then "Made in Japan" so I'm guessing that "Wales" was the factory name.
