I do have to say I got a lot done yesterday:
1. Tax-fu completed. I owe $80 less than what I originally sent in. That is a big win especially considering when I tried to do the AMT form I wound up thinking I owed an additional $6K.
2. Got the car serviced (finally). No damage from my misadventure with the mud pit.
3. Went to the Mart of Wal and it was marginally less annoying than most afternoon trips I have to make there. (I was nearly out of milk. I cannot live without having milk in the fridge. It would be a major adjustment if I ever developed a milk allergy or became lactose intolerant - giving up salt was not as hard as giving up milk would be).
Anyway, I found two new-to-me food products:
A. Sargento now makes a reduced-sodium string cheese stick. It is a solid 60 mg less than the lowest I was able to find otherwise, and it's not fake-smoke flavored. Yay, Sargento, you make me happy yet again!
B. I was making a big baked potato for dinner last night and I thought, "I'll just look at the bacon bits and see how high in sodium they are." Well, the fake-bacon ones (soy) are pretty darn high BUT there is a turkey-bacon bacon bit (I guess that's still fake bacon, but in my mind it's less "fake" than soy is) that had 95 mg per Tablespoon, which is more than what I'd use on a potato anyway. So I bought them.
I had my potato with a little sour cream (the kind I get is low in sodium to begin with), some sharp cheddar spread (which was low enough) and the bacon bits. It was delicious. It's always nice to be able to have a food again that tastes more or less like it tasted in the "before times" (before I had to limit sodium).
There aren't a LOT of things I miss, though "proper" potatoes are one (mashed potatoes aren't much good without salt). Eggs are another (I STILL haven't found an herb blend I really like.)
Then I realized: I can put a Tablespoon of these bacon bits in scrambled eggs, and they will give enough of a salt taste that the eggs will taste like eggs.
I CAN HAVE EGGS AGAIN.
My reaction wasn't quite this extreme:
But it was close.
(Now watch Wal-mart stop carrying both those things within six weeks....)
