I enjoyed the new "Mythbusters" last night. I have to admit I enjoyed the "bullet drop vs. bullet fired" myth more - I tend to like those "thought experiment things brought to life." I like the more math-and-physics based myths better than the "let's test an old saying" ones.
With the socks one...someone sent in a whole box of handknit socks, for them to essentially destroy in the last myth? Wow. It occurs to me as much as I'd like my 15 minutes (well, actually, it was more like 15 seconds - obviously none of the Mythbusters knits and they don't realize the work that goes into handknit socks) of fame, I realize there are some things I would totally not be willing to do for it. Knitting some 40 pairs of socks that I knew would be blown up being one of those things.
(That said: the person said on Ravelry they were pairs she had knit for herself that were wearing out. That makes it better to me. I couldn't imagine knitting that many socks THAT WOULD NEVER GET WORN and sending them in to be destroyed and getting your name mentioned briefly.)
I ALMOST got the first Angee sock done; I think I lack about 10 rounds of the toe decrease. Maybe tonight. If I'm not felled by a migraine. There's supposed to be a BIG GIANT COLD FRONT OH NOES come through here; the weather radio was talking about a 30 degree temperature drop in the matter of a couple of hours and said "THE RAPID CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE MAY BE STRESSFUL TO THOSE WHO ARE SENSITIVE TO RAPID WEATHER CHANGES."
I have never heard that before and I admit it sounds a bit ominous.
I have decided to let it be Socktober! I started the pair of just-simple Mini Mochi socks. Mini Mochi is a nice yarn BUT it is singles, so it seems very soft and weak and I'm thinking now that I might shift over to size 0s to do the foot (I'm doing the cuff on size 1s). Or I might consider if it's possible to do slipped stitch (like a heel stitch) across the foot. I don't know. I don't like knitting socks that I fear will wear out fast.
I'm thinking of starting yet another pair but am unsure as of yet.

I didn't care much for the sock myth either. I thought it was silly to even suggest it. When they brought out the hand knit socks I thought of you and thought that was rather bizarre.
How long to hand knit socks generally last? I've often thought that if I had a pair of hand knit socks I would be so afraid of wearing them out - thinking about all the work it took to make them - I wouldn't be able to wear them.
I got the same impression from that yarn - worried that even with the nylon the single will wear out that much sooner. I started off with 1s on the top, then moved to 0s, then to 00s (caveat: I knit very loosely), and the texture didn't seem to change noticeably AT ALL. It was just as fluffy on the smallest size as on the biggest one, although smaller. Weird.
