The answer is: Bad IAC valve.
D'oh. They will have to order one but it should be ready to pick the car up tomorrow. And the belt has been fixed so it won't squeal at me any more. And the oil and filters have been changed.
I will be so glad to have my nice comfy car back again and leave the Squeezebox (which would be a great name for some kind of ecofriendly subcompact) at the rental place. It's an OK car, I'm just a bit too tall and a bit too hip-py to be comfortable getting in and out of it. I will say it seems to handle pretty well. I just do not like the gearshift being down on my righthand side rather than right with the steering wheel.

Heh. I have never driven a car with the gear shift by the steering wheel. It's always been just in front of the seat if it's a bench seat like my F-150 or in front of but sort of in between the seats. It's funny how whatever you're used to seems "normal".
These IAC valves tend to be pricey little parts; I had to replace one on a Mazda once, and it ran to the wrong side of $600.
Weirdly, though my current car has an automatic, I instinctively grab for the shifter when slowing down, the result of twenty years of habit.
