I once before speculated on the popularity of octopi and their kin as subjects for knitting and crochet. (I think it's the eyes. Octopi have these freaky complex eyes, that are far more like a mammal's eye [both in appearance and function] than anything else in the invertebrate world). Or it might be that there's something appealing about the tentacles, that designers think, "Look at all these "handles" the child could carry the toy about by."

Or maybe just lots and lots of people LIKE Octopi. I wouldn't put them in my top 10 list of favorite animals, but they are still interesting.
