I haven't done a meme in a while, so what the heck, I'll do this one that I first saw over at dragonknitter's.

Added: Several have been guessed; I'm adding additional quotes to help the unguessed ones along.

(Added 3/27: Yay! TChem got two of the unguessed ones!)

1. Pick 10 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie (or get them out of your capacious memory).
3. Post them on your blog for everyone to guess.
4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. Looking them up is cheating, please don’t.

I've added a few hints or comments after some of my quotations.

If the quotes I've chosen are too obscure, I might add additional quotes in a couple days.

1. (maternal character) "All right, how did you do it?"
(child character) "I asked them and they did it. I just asked them nicely."

(There are two more lines that follow this but I think they give it away)

Second quotation for #1: "And though every single human in the stands or in the commentary boxes was at a complete loss for words, the man who in his life had uttered fewer words than any of them knew exactly what to say."

(There's another line right after this - I think it's the last line of the movie - that I feel would totally give it away...)

TChem guessed it: Babe. Also known as "Babe, the Gallant Pig."

One of my favorite movies ever, partly because of that first set of lines I quoted - the idea that you can "win" by being polite and respectful of others - and in fact, win "bigger" than others who use intimidation or rudeness - is a sentiment I cherish deeply.

2. "In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, an ancient race of people... the Druids. No one knows who they were or what they were doing... "

Jennifer: "This is Spinal Tap." (I think that's the correct title, or at least that's what I know it by)

(heh...that's one of my favorite parts out of that movie).

3. "Okay, pork belly prices have been dropping all morning, which means that everybody is waiting for it to hit rock bottom, so they can buy low. Which means that the people who own the pork belly contracts are saying, "Hey, we're losing all our damn money, and Christmas is around the corner, and I ain't gonna have no money to buy my son the G.I. Joe with the kung-fu grip! And my wife ain't gonna f... my wife ain't gonna make love to me if I got no money!" So they're panicking right now, they're screaming "SELL! SELL!" to get out before the price keeps dropping. They're panicking out there right now, I can feel it."

Another hint:

C: "Would you like a sip of whiskey?"
B: "I do not drink, it is against my religion!"
C: "Religion is a good thing I say, taken in moderation."

and a third:

"Beef jerky time!"

(hahahaha. That's my favorite line out of the movie, for some reason.)

Angie in Wilmington gets it: Trading Places.

4. "Simply try for one hour to behave like gentlemen."

(that is probably the most obscure movie of all I'm doing)

More lines from the same movie:

W: "May I ask you where you studied?"
O: "...Well, I didn't really study any place, Lady... I just sort of... picked it up."
W: "You know, I was so surprised when I heard what you were playing. It brought back something that, really, I'd completely forgotten all about: my 21st birthday party. You see, my father had engaged a string quintet to come in and play in the evening; and while they were playing Boccherini, someone came in and said the old queen had passed away. And everyone went home. And that was the end of my party, all that time ago, in Pembroke."
[Silence]
W: "Well, if you'll excuse me, I'll run and make the tea. The kettle *must* be nearly on the boil."
[She leaves]
O: "Who's she talkin' about? Old queen who?"

5. "Without even thinking about it, I used to be able to fly. Now I'm trying to look inside myself and find out how I did it."

(this one is actually from a translation - the original movie is in a language I do not speak).

More: "You'd think they'd never seen a girl and a cat on a broom before. "
and
"I'll only be able to afford pancakes...and get fat, Fat, FAT!!!" (that last is from memory so may not be exact)

TChem, also: this is "Kiki's Delivery Service." One of the lesser-known Miyazake movies, but one that's very sweet and lovely. It's basically a story of a young teenaged witch who is sent off to "find her talent." I love the movie mainly because of the setting - sort of a never-never land Europe where the technology seems to be just shortly post-WWII (the cars look like late 40s cars) and there's lovely architecture, and still lots of open space, and there's not really any ugliness or crime.

6. "That's a myth."
"What?"
"Myth! Myth!"
"Yeth?"

Yup, Muppet Movie. BigAlice gets this one.

7. "Somehow, it was hotter then. Men's stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning; ladies bathed before noon, after their 3 o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frosting from sweating and sweet talcum. The day was twenty-four hours long, but it seemed longer. There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go and nothing to buy... and no money to buy it with."

Melody: "To Kill a Mockingbird"

(I'm guessing more folks have read the book that the movie was based on than have seen the movie, but this quotation is in both and it's one of the really memorable parts for me...)

8. "...this rabble you're talking about... they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath? Anyway, my father didn't think so. People were human beings to him. But to you, a warped, frustrated old man, they're cattle. Well, in my book he died a much richer man than you'll ever be."

Also Melody: "It's a Wonderful Life"

9. "OKLA-homa! OKLA-homa! OKLA-homa!" and "May I take your trident, sir?"

(Maybe that's a gimme but the scene where that first quotation is set never fails to crack me up).

"Now that is a statue of a naked woman, and I can appreciate that, but otherwise YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!"

"Freddy, as a younger man, I was a sculptor, a painter, and a musician. There was just one problem: I wasn't very good. As a matter of fact, I was dreadful. I finally came to the frustrating conclusion that I had taste and style, but not talent. I knew my limitations. We all have our limitations, Freddy. Fortunately, I discovered that taste and style were commodities that people desired. Freddy, what I am saying is: know your limitations. You are a moron. "

10. "In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the... Anyone? Anyone?... the Great Depression, passed the... Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?... raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. "Voodoo" economics. "

Jennifer, again: "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"

(good grief, I hope I never sound like that in any of my classes.)

It strikes me that, with only one or two exceptions, those are comedies, and most of them fairly silly comedies, at that. Interesting.

"That'll do pig, that'll do."
*tear*. We have to fix our VCR so I can watch that again. The song in it is one of those things I can hum in a bad mood that just forces happiness upon me.

Is #5 Kiki's Delivery Service? I'm not at all sure, but it's what popped into my head.

Yay! I think I saw that subbed instead of dubbed, which may be why I wasn't sure; the words weren't etched in my head in quite the right way.
