Today is also Fat Tuesday. Or as I knew it better growing up, Pancake Day. Or Paczki day (Paczki, usually pronounced "pooch-key," are a type of Polish donut).

I could go for a donut this morning (even though I've been on an eating-healthier kick).

The idea behind the pancakes (which are typically an Episcopalian/Anglican/British thing) and the paczki are the using-up of eggs, rich milk, and butter, before the abstinence of Lent.

Yeah, Lent kind of sneaked up on me this year. I don't have any plans in mind for some kind of deep reflective thing or some kind of faith-testing thing. I'm thinking maybe what I NEED to do is work on being less hard on myself, though my inner critic says that's just being self-indulgent.

(So maybe I DO need to work on it.)

But I really COULD go for a donut, or some pancakes, or something like that. Or a piece of King Cake, which I normally don't care too much for, because the typical King Cakes you get around here from the supermarket are just their typical blah white-bread dough with some sugar added to it.

The local Episcopalian church is doing a pancake day, but this is going to be a busy busy day (2 meetings on top of the usual class work), so I don't imagine I'll be able to get away. And I have to find time sometime to get to the grocery as I am nearly out of milk and orange juice. (Maybe they'll have something good, I don't know).

I know what you mean about Lent; I know that tomorrow's Ash Wednesday because I was checking service times, but I'm having a hard time making that mental leap.

I hope that you got the treat, be it king cake, pancake, or doughnut.

having lived in a danish town for 10 years, abelskivvers were the "in" thing. basically, pancake batter baked ina s pecial mold, that makes them look like donut holes. kinda cool, from a foodie perspective.

i don't observe lent, except for the sales on fish, lol, (our local grocery store had catfish fillets on sale for $1.99/lb, so i stocked up, lol), but you're right, it did sneak up this year. i'm putting up easter ornaments on my etsy shop, and i don't have nearly as many as i wanted done. sigh
