I think we need to set up some kind of tontine or something in my department, so the faculty member left standing at the end of the semester wins a prize.

What has happened thus far:

One sabbatical leave
One maternity leave
One sick-leave for sort-of-scary surgery

And now, today:

One faculty member called for Grand Jury duty
One of the "temporary replacement" people called for Grand Jury duty.

(Yup, both at the same time.)

I am now afraid to: eat spinach (there's a new bacterial outbreak, BTW - Salmonella this time), stand near roofs where people are working on stuff, drive over bridges, change lightbulbs in a dampish atmosphere, or in general do anything else that might lead to my being taken out by a freak accident. Because it seems that normal probability has taken a holiday as far as my department is concerned.
