Arr!

Today be International Talk Like a Pirate Day!. However, as this wench be sick, and be soundin' more like Lucille Ball nearin' the end of her cigarette-soaked life than she be soundin' like a hearty of the boundin' main, she not be celebratin' today.

But, ye can Knit Like a Pirate, if ye dare.

Ye can also spend some 'o' yer booty for the Dread Pirate Sam Pattern.

(Even if the people at "What not to Crochet" snark on it. I mean, seriously: if you don't like button eyes, use something else. It's not like the pattern FORCES you to do that. Actually, that's my main complaint with a lot of the pattern-snark out there: I've seen people complain about the COLOR a pattern was made in. Good gosh, you can do it in any color you want. And if you have an imagination, you can picture it in other colors...Myself, I kinda like the pattern but I'd embroider the eyes instead. You know, to get that eyeliner effect...)

(And yes, yes, I know, pirates were evil people and were essentially the terrorists of the 17th and 18th centuries. [now THAT'S a thought that gives one pause...if the world still exists 300 years hence, will suicide bombers be seen in a romantic light?]. And yet, the pirates' story HAS been rewritten and HAS been romanticized...just as Robin Hood was most likely a small-time highwayman and not the "take from the rich and give to the poor" hero we see him as. And just as King Arthur probably really didn't exist (a thought which always makes me sad) or, if he did, was kind of a guerrilla-fighting chieftan against the Romans, rather than the noble king of legend...But still. I suppose pirates, to a modern, represent a sort of every-man-for-himself, open-seas adventurousness - and a chance at great wealth, even if it means taking it from the Crown or a rich merchant - and we don't get that kind of opportunity today. And of course, there's the clothing thing.)

Edited to add:
Just because we know The Truth About Pirates, doesn't mean we can't have some fun:

Your Pirate Name Is...
