Finished the Checkers socks:
I really like them. I wound up using 52 sts on the leg and 54 on the foot (the yarn is between sport and dk weight). I used the "garter stitch rib" pattern, which is somewhat reminiscent of the Ladder of Life socks (N.B.: .pdf file) that were designed by Ann Budd. I made the heelflap a bit narrower than the amount of stitches would suggest (24 sts; it was originally an error but I liked how it worked out). Used a French heel and the standard "Socka" toe (decrease, knit three rounds plain, decrease and then knit two rounds plain twice, decrease and then knit one round plain three times, then decrease every round until you have "few enough" stitches to Kitchener).
Back to working on the Fibonacci sweater; I wound off the rest of the yarn for it last night. (There is something comforting about winding yarn hanks into balls, I think it's partly the sound of the ball winder and partly the fact that it's a very low tech thing - the umbrella swift has probably been around for centuries, and the ballwinder I use is a simple hand-cranked model).
