I'm almost done with the first pair of momsocks for the Christmas present. I just have a bit more stockinette on the toe, and the toe decreases, and I'm done.
I broke one of my nice short size-2 Bryspun sock needles on these. I think I had the needle poked through the ball of yarn so it wouldn't get lost, and then I set a book on it :(
I tried gluing it but the join is not secure. Super glue does not work on whatever substance Bryspuns are made from.
(But - Thursday I'm making a yarn-shop pilgrimage, so I may be able to buy a new set!)
I also started the second pair of giftsocks for her, out of some Socka "Disco" snagged from Elann. The yarn pleases me greatly. It does not look so much "Disco" to me as it looks "folkloric sock spangled with snow." The patterning - on this particular colorway, soft browns, avocado, and pale blue - does not say "disco" to me. The glitzy silver strand is perhaps a bit incongruous with the soft, muted colors. But that's fine, it's a pretty sock anyway, and I'm glad I bought some in a different colorway for myself.
I also gave into startitis again. I started Jolene Treace's "River Forest Gansey" from the "Handknit Holidays" book. (In fact, I just started it this morning - cast on and knit the first row in the fifteen or so minutes of "spare time" I had before I needed to leave the house). I'm going to let the start of the back be my gauge swatch - I don't usually wash and block my gauge swatches anyway, and if I'm on-gauge this will save some time. If I'm not, at least it will be large enough for to clearly know I'm not.
I'm using the Elann "Sierra" yarn - it's 80% highland wool and 20% alpaca - for this. It's a slightly coarser wool than some, but I like it for what is essentially going to be an "outerwear" garment. It's a deep blue-green that Elann calls "spruce."
And for the "Firefly" fans out there - Jayne's Hat. (I watched the show for the brief blip of time it was on. I liked it, even though stupid Fox apparently showed the episodes out of order and apparently no one in the "target advertising demographic" did, so Fox dropped it [but then again, Fox has a recent history of letting good shows slip and keeping rather stupid shows]. I don't think I'll go to the movie, though, after learning a rather big spoiler about a secondary character who was, despite his being a secondary character, my favorite character on the show...)

I know the spoiler of which you speak. It's what made me decide that watching the movie in a public place might not be the best idea, lest the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments disturb the other moviewatchers.
