Monday is for starting things

Great balls of yarn! (coffee mug for scale)

I couldn't resist it - such huge hanks. In comparison with the little 50 g balls I usually work with, these are so different. (I'm hoping this will mean fewer joins. We will see. I don't know if there will be any knots in it).

I don't know; there's just something that amuses me about such huge balls of yarn.

And an aside - JoAnn's corporate offices (listed on the label, there) are now in the town where I grew up! (they were not there then; they're located in what used to be a Terex plant that made earthmoving equipment. In fact, when I was a kid, Terex used to do a Christmas display of Santa's sleigh on their front lawn and use front-end loaders for reindeer [they would put eyes and antlers and stuff on them so they looked more like reindeer; they even had a Rudolph with a red nose]).

The beginning of the simple garter-stitch Prairie Shawl. I was hoping to get to the first color gradation (that represents about 30 or 40 minutes of work last night), but the color changes are longer than they look on the ball.

I think I'm roughly getting gauge. I'm not really going to count rows, I'm just going to go until it's "big enough" (or I'm afraid I'm running out of yarn) and then do the finishing rows that happen across the top.

That looks really nice. I love the mug too.
