I finished the spiral rib on the first Grasshopper sock:

This photo has been altered to brighten it (I took it without flash so the stitch pattern wouldn't get washed out) and to sharpen both the contrast and the focus.

I figured out what the colors in the sock remind me of. In the Geographic Information Systems program that I use and teach a graduate class in, there are what are called "color ramps" that you can use to indicate different levels of some cartographic variable (like soil moisture, for instance). The colors in the Grasshopper Opal resemble one of the ESRI "color ramps." In fact, it's one I've used.
