Nostalgia time!

When I was a kid, Saturday mornings meant cartoons (not, ack pfui, news shows or lame things like "Teen Survivor"). And it also meant Schoolhouse Rock.

This is my favorite Schoolhouse Rock bit ever. I can still recite the Preamble to this day thanks to it. (On the site, you can hear the songs. You can also go to "Science Rock", "Grammar Rock", etc. and hear all of them, as far as I can tell. It's also possible to order tapes and dvds from the site).

The songs, upon rehearing them, have a distinctly 70s sound. The example I posted above is definitely folk rock. I don't know if a modernized version of Schoolhouse Rock would work - the old ones were so earnest and John Denver-ish. And educational things just sound ridiculous when translated into a rap, IMHO.

Maybe if they wanted to redo Schoolhouse Rock they could get people like They Might Be Giants to do them, then it might work ok.

I have to admit I have a real soft spot for the old Schoolhouse Rocks. In some way, they did help to form my musical tastes. I still like folk-rock to this day partly because of those bits.

And I have to admit, when I was seven or eight, this seemed very deep and mystical to me:
Figure eight as double four
Figure four as half of eight
If you skate, you would be great
If you could make a figure eight
That's a circle that turns 'round upon itself
Place it on its side and it's a symbol meaning infinity
