I've finally gotten the knack of knitting (well, knitting simple stuff anyway) and reading at the same time. (it works best if you have a hardback book or a magazine; paperbacks - especially the cheapie mass-market ones - don't like to stay open).

it works best for me if I have something that is just knit, knit, knit. So I can work on stockinette st socks, or something knitted flat in garter st.

So yesterday, I cast on and started a Seaman's scarf. When it's done, I am sending it to Christmas-at-sea.

I had forgotten how slowly garter st. goes, and how hard pure acrylic is on my hands.

Now I'm thinking shawls again (but I must, must, must finish something else first). I have several skeins of Homespun in the color "Prairie" and I'm debating whether to do the triangular shawl that Lion Brand had a pattern out for, or whether to just cast on a bunch of sts, do a seed or moss st edge, and then knit a stockinette stitch rectangular shawl. I want something that is just plain and warm to wrap up in this fall when I am at home....
