This is probably the most complicated critter I have made since Queen Chrysalis. That one was complicated in different ways (the holes in the legs).
This one is crocheted in two colors. Doing two-color crochet, where you have to carry the second color (I was NOT cutting the blue each row on the belly and then having to tie in a million ends) is even more of a pain than having to carry/work in colors in multi color knitting.
It also makes a pretty stiff fabric, but that's actually not such a bad thing.
This was a pattern I bought on Ravelry because I thought it was cute and interesting (and at first I thought it was knitted....which might have been a bit easier). It turns out there's a whale-shark character in the "Finding Dory" movie that's coming out this summer, but I didn't realize that at the time.
You can see how big of a stuffie this is - that's my armchair there.
I named the whale shark Darwin. I didn't know much about them going in, so I didn't want to try giving a "regional" type name and get it wrong. (It turns out they are pretty widespread - found throughout tropical seas). They are filter feeders (I kind of guessed that from the wide mouth on the pattern) and eats plankton. So even though they can be immense (even larger than great white sharks), they pose no threat to humans. (Some places the sharks are protected: in the waters around the Philippines, divers are fined if they get too close to them).
In the "real world," they are grey with yellow spots but I guess that can look kind of blue and white given the distortion of light by the water.
The original pattern had crocheted eyes (make a black circle, then the white outer rim) but I admit by the time I had made all the little fins and stuff, I was kind of done, so I decided to do felt eyes instead. I also added a "sparkle" or "eyeshine" or whatever you want to call it, because that automatically makes things cuter:
As I noted earlier, I named him after the somewhat-naive (but also somewhat-less-cynical-than-the-rest-of-the-family) "adopted little brother" on Amazing World of Gumball. (Darwin is a goldfish that grew legs...)
