I'm really glad I decided NOT to do a McKinney trip today (to have something like a full day there, I have to leave here shortly before 9) because that would have meant I missed today's new episode. (Generally, having to leave for Sunday School prevents me from seeing the Sunday episodes...if they run one at 8:30 I can catch it, but usually that one's an older re-run).
I really liked today's episode.
For one thing, it was a Pegasus-centric episode and I like those, because of the three varieties of ponies, the Pegasi are my favorites. (I've said before, that even with unicorn magic an option, I'd probably choose to be a Pegasus if I were choosing a type of Pony to be. It's the flying thing - being able to see the world from a different perspective, having a mode of transportation not open to the earth-bound ones, and being able to get up, up, and away from noise and at least 2/3 of my fellow citizens.)
I also liked the message of the episode - it centered around loyalty to those you love and not dumping your friends just because
(Yes, I still think ruefully of that time that the girl I thought of as my BFF was invited to sit at the popular-girls' table, and ever after, she would have nothing to do with me. But happily, Rainbow Dash was better than that.)
But there were a couple of other little things that made me grin. I'll mention the less spoilery ones, and the one spoiler I will give will be very general:
Pinkie Pie as a cheerleader. And "How do I get pom-poms like THOSE?" Heh.
Fluttershy, never a strong flyer, is apparently good enough to be part of a team that qualifies for a flying relay race. Well, I suppose she had to have a role in the episode....
Derpy is back. (this is the one spoilerish thing). I actually went "DEEERRRRRRRPPPPYYYYYY!!!!!" sitting there in my living room when I saw it was her and realized that it was, for-sure, here. (she is not merely a brief background glimpse in this episode). I'm happy that they decided not to write her out forever even though a few people were apparently offended by the name the fans gave her, the goofy eyes, and the voice she was originally dubbed with. (I suspect she'll never speak, nor her name officially spoken on the show, again, but that's okay.)
The big, muscled-up white Pegasus (seen in "Hurricane Fluttershy" and elsewhere - the "OH YEAH!!!" pony) is officially named Bulk Biceps, apparently. (I was kind of rooting for the fan-given name of Snowflake, because it's so incongruous. But I'm glad they didn't go with Roid Rage, another fan-given name).
My only question: Do horses actually HAVE biceps? I suppose they have a muscle that is homologous to our bicep, seeing as the bones of their forelegs are essentially the same bones (differing in relative size and bulkiness) that we have in our arms. (I tend to overthink these things anyway).
But I do think Bulk Bicep is now my second-favorite boy-pony. (Big Mac remains a solid first).
And I fully expect in the coming weeks to see either fan art or fan fiction including a FlutterBulk 'shipping, seeing that they were standing together for much of the episode.
And that at one point, after a mishap, Fluttershy wound up trapped between Bulk's shoulder muscles. That was one of the three moments that made me laugh out loud.
The second one was: "P IS FOR RAINBOW DASH!!!!!!" Oh, Bulk Bicep, you big lummox.
(The third one - no, it's too much of a spoiler. You will know what it is when you see the episode. I'll say it came almost at the very end.)
But yeah, a very enjoyable episode, one that (for me at least) in some ways harked back to the best days of Season 2.
