So, I went out this morning. It was overcast and foggy at first so I thought, "You know, if I have all the tools and supplies in my field kit in the back of the car, I'll just collect the soil today instead, and do the bee stuff tomorrow."
And I did, to my great joy I found I had 20 freezer bags and my corer and a Sharpie - which is all I needed. So I got all the soil (and it didn't gripe my arm badly, and actually, I find with MORE use the pain is LESS, and I think if I had done bad damage that would not be so).
As I was preparing to leave, around 10:15, the fog had burned off, it was warmer, the sun was up - but no bees anywhere.
Strange. This is supposed to be the time of maximal populations. And every other article I've read has listed doing morning sampling times. So I don't know, maybe we have lazy bees that sleep in?
I'm going to go and do the bee stuff tomorrow (it's supposed to be warmer in the morning and less foggy) but if I don't have much success I may have to start doing Friday afternoon sampling instead. The downside is it's doing hard work on a Friday afternoon, but the upside is after it, I can just go home, take a shower, and relax and not have to think about coming back for office hours or something.
