Here, as promised, are pictures of my sea-ponified version of Cherry Spices.
The hair actually turned out extremely heavy. That is a dense novelty yarn (JoAnn Fabrics' "Rosario") and the spiral curls also are fairly dense. I did also crochet a few just-plain-chains and mix them in to give a bit of hair diversity.
Here's a slightly better photo of the face. (Normally the stuffing doesn't show through quite so much; I think that's the fault of the flash):
I tried to make the eyes like the one on the minifig - same color and similar shape. (She has "Rarity style" heavy eyelashes but they don't show up so well on the photo).
I gave her a "cutie mark" (or "butt symbol," if you want to be cruder but less twee). The pattern didn't call for it but when I saw the cherry button (Cherry Spices' symbol is a twin cherry, just like this). I like it. I think it adds something. You can also kind of see her fins there and the back ridges....you crochet the back ridges directly onto the body (you attach the yarn and work them after the toy is stuffed). It works well, but it's a little tight and difficult and I could feel it "twinging" my wrist at points (Sometimes that happens with crochet, if I'm doing something tight or awkward; it's a little sharp pain in the wrist, like trying to force open a jar you're not quite strong enough to do).
The pattern designer notes that these are "strangely comforting to hold" and I agree with her on that. (I admit - one night as I was working on this - had the hair on but not the face or fins yet - I just left it on my lap and had my right hand on it as I was taking my blood pressure. I'll never know if it was the CAUSE but both systolic and diastolic were at least 5 points lower than they had been the previous day. Pity I can't bring a softie with me to the doctor's and test it out there...)
