sea pony progress

I did add a little more hair to the sea-pony toy in progress (a color clone of the "Cherry Spices" pony minifig. I suppose if I had thought a bit, I might have done Minuette or even Snowflake (the enormous, pumped-up male white Pegasus known for his OH YEAH! tagline. But I like Cherry Spices' colors, and I like how this is turning out:

I'm really glad I decided to do the corkscrew curl hair. The novelty yarn is rather delicate and tends to shred easily as single strands. And the corkscrews are tactilely appealing - heavy and smooth and bouncy. (Tactile things are very important to me. Perhaps I'm touch-deprived, not having significant others (husband or partner, kids) or even pets in my life). I think the colors are working out well. I AM going to use plain worsted-weight in a reddish color for the fin tips (heh, they will look like nail polish) and the edge of the dorsal fin as it will work up a lot more smoothly. I did switch to a size I hook for the curls and that went more easily.

I still have the ears and horn and fin to do. (And I'm going to make one more curl for the back, and a short "flip" curl for her left front side). And the face - I am going to do appliqued eyes like I did with my other ponies. (The pattern called for using the lock-washer eyes, which are fine, but less expressive, and I like the embroidered eyes.)

The toy is made in all half-double crochet, which works up faster and is less rigid than single crochet, but it's looser - even though I crocheted and stuffed with care, there are a few spots (especially the neck, which you have to stuff firmly so the head won't wobble) where the stuffing shows through.

I might get this one done tonight; I hope.
