Oontz, oontz, oontz....

Or perhaps, wub, wub, wub. (Apparently either sound effect is acceptable).

I finished Vinyl Scratch, stage name DJ PON-3.

DJ Goggles

The goggles. Oy, the goggles were more of a pain to make than I anticipated. My idea was: cut a backing of black felt that was solid, cut a matching front frame but cut out the openings, and sandwich the lens material (purple) between them. And while I was at it, catch the ends of the elastic that holds them on in the absence of unicorn magic. I decided to do this using the machine, so it would be stiffer and probably sturdier.

Well, two problems:

1. They're really small, like 2" across, so they're hard to sew.

2. I couldn't find the bit of nice black wool felt I had left over, so last weekend I bought a piece of black felt at JoAnn's. Ugh. It's not well made and tells me in the future that I will spring for the more expensive wool felt. It boasts that it's Eco-Felt (made from old soda bottles), and bully for it, but it's NOT nice to work with because it's thin, stretchy, and feels sleazy. Oh well. (And I found my black felt just now, rearranging stuff around the computer).

And at any rate, I really like how her eyes came out, so I think she will probably mostly not wear the goggles:

You can also see there that I gave her an open-mouthed, "toothy" smile. That's how she's often shown, both in fanart and in some of the show's promotional materials, so I decided to do that instead of the more demure closed-mouth smile most of my ponies have.

I think it was a good choice.

I used an ecru colored yarn for her. Just as there was some controversy about her "real" eye color, there was dispute on her pelt color - a lot of fanart shows her as a white unicorn, but apparently the official color is "a very pale yellow." So I went with the closest thing I could get (and I didn't want something that screamed "yellow!")

Also, if I DO eventually make a white unicorn....well, I want her to be unique. And yeah, I've contemplated making a Rarity off and on (mostly off). The biggest hangup is getting her hair right - how to make those ringlet curls that will stay? I've read stuff in some of my dollmaking books but I'm not sanguine about putting acrylic yarn in the oven (yikes!) wrapped around knitting needles to try to set a curl.

I keep thinking that maybe those crocheted corkscrews, like on those "bookworm" bookmarks that were popular when I was a kid, might be close enough. If I decide to do it I will probably play around with the hair first to see if I can come up with something satisfactory.

oontz oontz
oontz oontz

(Even though I'm not a fan of loud, driving bass in music, it is kind of fun to go around saying "oontz oontz oontz oontz" which is supposed to mimic that sound)

And she has the requisite cutie mark (or butt symbol, as Lauren Faust called them):

It's embroidered, that was a lot easier than trying to make something that thin out of felt.

Even though I wasn't impressed with how the goggles came out, you can do one thing with them:

Deal with it 1
Deal with it 2

"Deal with it" (Which I am needing to say to some people, these days)

I suppose this means I will need to consider making an Octavia to keep her company.

And even though she's an electronica fan,  Vinyl still seemed enthusiastic over some of my music collection:

#FEFDE7, says the layout artist. That's seriously pale, as yellow goes. (Best view: in Magical Mystery Cure, while Fluttershy is boring the plots off the ponies at Sugarcube Corner.)
