Even despite having tweeted that I would get nothing done all day (because of excitement over NEW BABY), I was pretty productive. And I thought of two more things I want to do, one in the short term, one much longer term:
1. I'm going to bake cupcakes or a cake on Sunday and bring it in Monday to celebrate. There's a rural (I think it was mostly rural) British tradition of "wetting the baby's head" (as in: the new dad and his buddies go down to the pub and drink to the health of baby and mom). But since I don't drink (and you can't bring beer on campus anyway), we will "cake" the baby's head instead.
I think Pinkie Pie would approve of that.
(It will be bonus points if I can find baby-themed sugar decorations at the grocery store this weekend....)
2. Not this year (she will be too young yet) but starting next year or the year after that, I think the tradition of Older Female Relative Making Grandchild Christmas Cookies has to start up again. This is one of the cherished memories of my childhood: every year, my grandmother would make a specific cut-out butter cookie recipe at Christmas and decorate them with red and green sugar, and then mail me a coffeecan full. I'll defer the tradition to my mom (if she wants to do it, after all, she is the grandma), but if she doesn't, I'll do it, as Auntie. Because I like the idea of that continuing down another generation, even if Sarah-Jane is 23 years too late to have met the woman who was her great-grandmother.
