I "heard" (via Twitter) that Snooki (of Jersey Shore fame) had had her baby.
And it's funny what my brain gets off onto. I was thinking this morning, a little sadly, "that's one other thing she has done that I will never do"
I was thinking the other thing was "'write' a book." (Scare quotes because I assume a ghostwriter was heavily involved; they generally are in celebrity books).
Oddly enough, my Inner Cynic/Critic and Inner Cheerleader showed up about that time and started discussing my thoughts:
Cheerleader: "Oh, so she [meaning me] means she hasn't been drunk off her butt? Yeah, that's accurate. Not that I would think that being drunk off your butt would be something to celebrate having been..."
Cynic: "No, she means the book thing."
Cheerleader: "Yeah, but she's written and published scientific journal articles."
Cynic: "Do you KNOW anyone who's read her articles?"
Cheerleader: "Yeah, well....do you KNOW anyone who read Snooki's book?"
Cynic: "Touché."
My Cheerleader (who, as I once said before, sounds, for some odd reason, like Applejack) also remarked that there were a lot of other things I had achieved: "But sugarcube, you earned a Ph.D. And you're a professor! And you're an elder in your church. And people generally respect you."
And yeah, it's true. (Though I admit I still would like to be able to say I've written a book some day, even though after hearing the tsuris one of my colleagues has gone through with agents and publishers and such, I'm not so sure. And yes, yes, I know there is self-publication, but to me that seems like a shortcut: that getting a for-real book accepted by a for-real publisher is what I would want.)

In my own very limited experience, getting a book published is easier than an academic article. Now getting the book written is another matter altogether!
