That's one way of looking at Lyra (or Heartstrings, or Lyra Heartstrings. I think "canon" has finally settled on the last of those names: she was originally "Heartstrings" but the fans started calling her Lyra, and I think the writers for the show adopted it.) She's often seen in the background (well, she IS a "background pony") jumping up and waving - photobombing - to get her face in the shot.
She's one of those that became a fan favorite. As I said before with Derpy, I think that's partly because she doesn't have a set personality that is really brought out on the show, so fans can interpret her however they choose.
There's also the popular "sitting Lyra" meme - in one episode of the show she was seen sitting "human style" on a park bench (rather than reclining on all fours, which is how the other ponies sit).
A while back I decided I wanted to make a Lyra for my collection. I had found yarn that was fairly appropriate for her hair, and I already had some Bernat Softee Baby on hand that was the right color for her pelt.
I think her face came out well. I think Luna is STILL the prettiest of the ponies I made (and Fluttershy is still my favorite), but I think I captured Lyra's typical expression well.
She also got her lyre shaped cutie mark.
I had some gold floss on hand so I had to use that for the lyre strings. (And I'm contemplating making a little felt lyre for her to carry around.)
Her hair and tail aren't PERFECT, the colors don't exactly match the show colors (there's some green in the mane: the yarn I bought was a blue, green, and white ombre) and they're a bit shorter than they might be. But I still think they work.
I also HAD to re-create the Sitting Lyra meme, using a stuffed toy-sized chair I made quite a few years back:
Yup, she even sits up well.
And I had to show her DOING something rather than just sitting. Now I kind of wish I still had one of the doll's tea sets I had as a child: the cups and saucers would be the right size to have her sitting there with 'coffee.' But a book works also:
I think this is my favorite of the pictures of her.
