A student caught me in the hall today and as an "explanation" as to why he didn't follow the directions on something (or apparently know due dates of stuff, or know where the lab met, or all manner of things) said, "Well, in (department that shall remain nameless but where student in question is majoring), we never use syllabi, so I didn't bother to look at yours."
Normally I'm nicer than this, but my response was to very coldly say, "Well, in BIOLOGY we stick pretty close to the syllabi" and I didn't offer any consolation or any kind of a "that's okay, I'll accept the late paper" (which is what I think was being fished for).

Oh yeah, the "I don't look at syllabi" dude. Facepalm, indeed.
