People seem to do gimmicky things on knitblogs for October. (I've done it myself: participated in one of the early Socktober! ideas, and also did a "start-over October" a couple years ago).
I quipped a few days back that maybe this month should be Stashtober! where I go through my extensive yarn stash and pull out a few things and start them.
Well, I did that last night. I had seen the Sockhead Hat on Ravelry a while back (link is to the pattern author's blog, so the non-Ravelry types can see if if they like). It's a super simple hat made from a 100 g skein of sock yarn - which most every sock knitter has some of tucked away.
I pulled out a skein I had bought over a year ago and never quite figured out a pattern for. I had bought it from Loopy Ewe. It was from Perchance to Knit (no longer available from LE, it looks like), the colorway is called Drama Queen. Very, very bright - reds and yellows and purples and even orange, actually colors quite out of character for me. (I think I must have bought it during a gray time of year).
I wound it off and decided to make the hat of it - I cast on and started the ribbing last night. I think this hat will be an excellent use of the yarn, the wider diameter of the hat makes it sort of stripe rather than pooling, which is what I was afraid it would do on socks. And I like the idea of having an "ohmigosh BRIGHT" hat to wear on those gray winter days. (Provided we actually get some this year - I am not happy about the continuing drought).
I'm also contemplating starting the Jane Brocket cabled socks. And maybe a pair of wristwarmers. (But first, I do want to finish SOMETHING that is on the needles at the moment)

I went to craft store tonight, browsed through the yarn section, and had this desire to make a crochet Cthulhu. I know he’s a terrible Old One, but he’d look so cute on my desk!
