Something I forgot.

During the "parade of over-break projects," I got interrupted and never posted about this one. This is another Rebecca Danger pattern, this one is from the most recent issue of KnitSimple. (And it was the Rebecca Danger patterns in that issue that made me decide to resubscribe...I was going to let the subscription lapse.)

She had three patterns in there - two "monsters" (or at least, undefinable creatures) and a hippo. The hippo was the one that appealed the most to me.

On my "day out" in Longview this July, I bought a skein of Ella Rae yarn for the hippo. (That's one of the brilliant things about toys - you can use pretty much any yarn, in any color and even almost any weight (provided you adjust the needle size) for them.)

So, this is Wisteria. I was originally going to name her Ella Rae after the yarn, but I think she looks more like a Wisteria.

Wisteria

The eyes match the yarn in color, and that pleases me. I think they were from a bag of mixed "pearlized" eye colors I bought from the seller who goes by the name 6060 on etsy. (I've always had good service from that seller - and it's one of the few places to get those kind of safety eyes any more; few brick and mortar craft stores seem to carry them any longer).

The "nose" on the hippo is done much like an afterthought heel - you knit the stitches-that-will-be-the-foundation onto a piece of waste yarn, and then, at the end, take out the waste yarn and pick up the stitches...that's another nice thing about some toy patterns, they make use of a lot of the neat techniques of knitting in the service of shaping the toy. (This one is knit pretty much entirely in the round, which I vastly prefer for toy-making).

Oh, she's so cute! And she's definitely a Wisteria.

I just learned to knit this summer (yes, I'm 61; this is a case of better late than never) and that's one of the patterns that's on my list to make.
