more snow Friday?

I can do research-reading at home, but that's about it. I'm pretty well prepped for next week's classes (seeing as this week's were pretty much a wash-out) and as for doing over-the-Net research, what I do do, I need to be logged in over on campus for. (Something to do with the address....you can't access some of the databases from a non-campus address). And of course, field research is right out. Even if I could GET to the soil to dig it up, or even if the plants were actively growing, I don't want to be out in 0 degree windchill...

I could dink around on Blackboard and import stuff into the current semesters' classes from previous semesters, but doing that would take about 3 times the time and effort that it would to download from my thumbdrive - which is also up on campus. (And really: uploading from the thumbdrive takes less than 5 minutes).

I really thought, "We'll be closed Tuesday, MAYBE Wednesday, and then we'll be back."

Now I'm wondering if we will open tomorrow; they've upped the snow chances to 50%.

I did pull out the powdered milk last night and mix up a batch. It didn't taste very good as of last night but they said it improves after a night in the fridge. We'll see. At the very least, I could use it on cereal (and in tea, if I want it in tea) or use it in cooking and ration out the "real" milk until I can get to the store. (And until the stores have restocked, which is getting to be an issue here. So far the only thing they announced shortages of among food was that Ada was low on eggs, but I wouldn't be surprised if some stores here were out of milk. I might call the Green Spray midday today to verify that (a) they are open and (b) they have either skim or 1% milk in stock.)

Perhaps Saturday will be better. But merciful heavens, that will be the day before the Super Bowl and I remember my previous Saturday Before Super Bowl grocery shopping day unfondly. And it will be even worse if Saturday is the first day people can get out.

At any rate, milk is the only issue - I have enough chicken broth and beans and canned tomatoes and everything else, really, that I need.

And I have some plain yogurt I should use up. I think dinner tonight will be refried beans, tortillas, and use the yogurt in place of the sour cream I do not have. (or if I can get out to Green Spray, I bet they'd have sour cream.)

So it's not like The Long Winter yet, where I go trekking over to a neighbor's and pull the knothole out of the wall, and then look very disappointed at him when I see that he's hoarding seed wheat that people could be eating...And at any rate, I have a good stock of canned goods and reasonable ingenuity. I have lots of tomatoes and some bread so I could make scalloped tomatoes. And I have corn and lots of eggs, so I could make corn fritters.

They are warning us to conserve electricity; North Texas had rolling blackouts yesterday. So I'm not going to do my laundry this morning (or evening; apparently those are the worst times) and I guess I won't run the space heater (I turned my furnace down to 62 in order to both keep my gas bill from being so astronomical and to save wear and tear on the furnace - it was running constantly, earlier, and that always worries me a bit). So I'm kind of bundled up and am thinking that maybe doing some handquilting, or knitting on something that covers my lap, might be a good idea. (Pity I can't read and handquilt at the same time). Or I'll get out a small quilt and wrap up in it while I read.
