Other knitbloggers have linked the story of the unforgettable cab ride, but you might not happen to read them, so I'm linking it too.

That story made me cry. In a good way, I mean. One of my wishes in life is to have the chance to do something similar to that - something that makes some kind of a difference to someone. Something where I am there at the time when I am most needed, and where I recognize that need, and am smart enough and kind enough to do what is needed.

And I hope, if it comes down to it some day that I'm that little old lady in the pillbox hat with a veil, that there will be someone willing to make that last drive with me in such a kind way.

At the very simplest level, all we really have on this earth is each other. Call it being the hands and feet of Jesus if you lean that way, call it recognizing the divine in another person and reaching out to it if you lean that way. But I think - I HOPE - there are hundreds, thousands of stories like that out there. Because it also makes me think of an old Jewish saying that goes something like, every time someone does a kind act motivated out of selflessness, God looks down and says, "It is for this that I do not destroy the world."
