When the going gets tough for a little bit, the not-so-tough....
start new socks.
This is the first of the Go With The Flow socks...the ones I talked about resizing the pattern for. They're really hard to photograph and show the lace pattern; hopefully once I get farther along the pattern will kind of settle down.
I'm using ShibuiKnits Sock for this, it's the color that Simply Sock Yarn calls "Anime" - 3601 or 3602, something like that.
I also started another pair of just simple socks, this time with a picot edge and a very subtle rib (k7, p1).
These are like Lydia's current socks, only different.
(That's a joke that only I get. My Community Ecology prof in grad school - one of the scarier profs in the department (think Severus Snape without the goth-y vibe and cool British accent) used that form to describe gambusia fish to someone who didn't know what they were: "Gambusia are like guppies, only different." Because he was someone who was a STICKLER for precision, we all thought the description was pretty funny).
The yarn is Felici in the now-sold-out "Clay" color, which is what she's using for her toe-up socks. I'm doing them from the top down because that's how I roll on socks. And I'm doing a picot edge because I felt like it. Even though my picot edges always turn out a little bit lumpy.
The thing is, the color reminds me more of cheeseburgers (see? catsup, cheese, hamburger patty, bun?) so since I thought of them once as my "I Can Has Cheezburger?" socks, that's probably what I'll think of them as from now on.

In a few minutes is the first "scheduled" phone call (we plan on times so we're all sure to be home) from my parents since Patty's loss. I hope I don't cry. I probably will. I've been doing okay during the days but in the evening when I'm tired and not really doing anything and kind of beat down from going a whole day in the heat and humidity, I'm a little less laced up.
(Edited to add: No, I didn't. And we discussed the "memorial" plans...they bought a perennial plant (a pink coreopsis) and are going to plant it in their front garden when they bury her ashes. So though I'm still a little sad, I'm coming to acceptance, and at least I didn't cry again. Because I'm really getting tired of crying.)

We have a memorial service for any cat we bury, even those we find dead or ferals who die or have to be put down. We even tell friends so they can attend if they were particularly fond of the cat.
In the Egyptian tradition, loosely followed, we put a bit of food, a favorite toy and a bit of catnip in with the cat, because cats were treated like royalty in ancient Egypt, and they've never forgotten that.
Each of our cat graves is marked in some way - a hummingbird feeder for Freyja who still caught hummers when she was 17, a plant or a bit of statuary. KittyHawk has an airplane-shaped pedal car. It's a nice reminder for us, and adds a bit of interest to our gardens.
The flow socks are going to look great, I love the color.
It's important to have some kind of memorial recognition when a family member leaves us. It's equally important to somehow mark their final resting place. I'm glad you're working through your grief.
