Some socks.

I completed the two most-complex socks I was working on over my recent break.

First, the "Snicket" socks, from the now-defunct MagKnits:

I used a Dream in Color sockyarn...I forget the name of it but it was color 120 and was something like "Springtime Surprise." It's sort of a "poison" green (as quilters would term it) but less bright.

I did alter the pattern a little. The original pattern called for a short-rowed "hourglass" type heel (I sometimes feel I should specify because strictly speaking, even flapped-heels are shortrowed; it's just that the short rows happen under the foot rather than alongside the heel). The "hourglass" type heel doesn't fit me well and tends to slitch around on my foot when I'm wearing it (and yeah, I kind of have that problem with commercial socks, which are made that way).

So I substituted a standard heel-flap and a "half-handkerchief" heel-turn.

As you can see here.

I also finished the "Child's French Sock with Citron Pattern and Diaper Knitting." (Except they're not "child's" socks any more; the pattern in the book is sized for a woman) from Nancy Bush's "Vintage Knit Socks" or "Knitting Vintage Socks" or whatever the title is.

These, I knit following the pattern. (I don't think I even had to alter the length on them and I often do with Bush's sock patterns.

And here's the heel, with the nice little detail that the diaper knitting pattern continues down the length of the heel flap:

I am not sure why it is called a "diaper" pattern but I am quite sure that it's an earlier use of the term "diaper" than what we typically think of (If I remember correctly, diapers got CALLED diapers because many of them were woven in a diaper pattern.)

(Diaper originally meant some kind of small, repeating, interlocking pattern - often a diamond pattern. Diaper knitting is basically 3 rows of k1, p1 (viewed from the right side) alternating with 3 rows of p1, k1 (again, viewed from the right side) so it gives the sort of staggered-rectangles effect you can see in the photo).

Nice socks! You do good work. I seem to remember that back when I was young, diapers were made from cloth that was woven in a birdseye pattern. I have no idea why it was called that but it was fabric with a texture to it.

Great Work. I made the diaper pattern socks last year, and I did not think I would ever finish them. Of course I had to completely redo one because it was the wrong size, but they still seemed to take a long time.

Both pairs are lovely and I am sure it feels great to have them done.
