Not awesome: in the "Instructions to Authors" of the journal where I was thinking of submitting the paper I've currently been working the most on, there's a little instruction I overlooked. They want all papers to be 4000 words or less.

Current word tally on mine? 5517. (And no, that's not counting the literature cited or anything). So I'm going to get out my pen and start slashing. (I'm going to keep an un-eviscerated version of the paper on disk in case that particular journal rejects it, then I can submit it somewhere else in its full form.)

I really hate writing-for-publication - and this is just one reason why. You labor over something, you polish and fuss and select just the right words, and finally when you're fairly happy with it, boom, you have to change it.

Ughh. Good luck with the slashing. I know the feeling.

I hope it goes well. That does sound really unpleasant.
