Many sock-knitters talk about "Second Sock Syndrome," or SSS.
I've seen it applied to two different situations:
First: you're doing a pair of socks, either "from scratch" or from a pattern where you're modifying on the fly. And you neglect to write down what you're doing. So, when you get to the second sock, either you don't remember exactly what you did, or (if you're following a pattern) you forget that you modified it. And so, either the two socks come out looking different, or you get stuck.
Second: you knit the first sock. Then you just don't feel like knitting the other. You've already figured out the pattern, so it's no longer a challenge. The socks languish in the knitting basket (or your bag, or on a shelf). They may never get finished. There are even some knitters who wear mismatched socks because they can't bring themselves to finish a pair.
Well, I've had the first instance happen to me - I'm particularly bad about noting how I do toes. But I've never known the second. Actually, second socks tend to go faster for me, because I've figured out the pattern. Even on complex patterns, I reach a point where I have the pattern more or less memorized, and I can do it without much consultation of the pattern sheet or book. And I have the motivation to finish - because when the second sock's done, I have another pair! And I can start on something new! (which is usually the greater motivation of the two).
So I'm working away on the Snicket socks. I'm on the last repeat (a 20 row repeat) for the leg. Then I just have to remember how I altered the pattern to change the short-row heel to a flapped heel (I am quite sure I did a half-handkerchief heel; I just have to figure out how many stitches I did the flap on and how I shifted stitches to make the instep).
And I still hold the Dream in Color sock yarn in high esteem - the "veil dying" process (however that works) make a very subtle variegated that doesn't pool but has an interesting mix of shades. (I'm using a sort of poison-green for these socks; I don't remember the number or name of the color.) I also have some in the colorway called "Butter Peeps" (I love that name) set aside - it's yellow with a tiny bit of pink in it. I'm not quite sure what socks to use it for but I'm leaning towards the all-over cabled socks ("Urban Boot Socks?" was that the name?) in the Interweave Sock book, or maybe Erica Alexander's rib-and-cable socks (which I have made before, but out of a busy variegated yarn, so these would look very different).
