The pattern is by a seller on Etsy named Edafedd; her patterns are not terribly expensive ($4 each) and there are some really unusual ones on there. I made the Beluga first because I thought it was the cutest (but the humpback whale, which I also bought, is pretty cute too, and I'm going to make one some time).
The pattern is quite easy to follow (the only slightly tricky part is forming the chin and I wound up doing it wrong and having to rip back).
I used Bernat's "Denim Style" for this; it took maybe 3/4 of a skein. This is a really nice yarn for ami's if you can find a color you want to use (most of it is sort of heathered denim colors). It doesn't stretch and it doesn't split. And the cotton in it makes it sort of cuddly.
Here's an idea of the size of the beluga, with my hand in the picture (although I have friends who claim my hands are small, I think they're about average sized for a woman.)
I'm calling the whale "Bubbles" unless I can come up with a less silly name. I was thinking originally of applying a Russian (female) name to it as many Belugas live in the Artic Sea north of Russia (and the name originally came from Russian), but it seems too grand to call this little critter "Nadia" or something like that.
We may get horrible storms tonight and they're even talking SNOW tomorrow afternoon. I teach a 3 pm to 5 pm lab so I'm really hoping we don't get any snow.
The good news is the hail- if we get it - is supposed to come tonight and my car is safely away in the garage.

maybe you could name her "baba?" it's yiddish for grandma, but it would go with the bubbles part, and not be too grandiose. (don't quote me on the yiddish part, lol)
