Well, I'm legal for four more years.

(For driving, at least).

I got down to the tag office this afternoon. I carried multiple pieces of identification - even tracked down my social security card (which I probably SHOULD put in my safety deposit box) - because I had heard that the new "Real ID" act was going to make it even harder for folks to "prove" they are who they claim to be.

I didn't need any of it. They asked me if I still lived at the same address (I do), asked me for $21.50, made a scan of my index fingerprints, and gave me a new license.

One weird new thing - they made me take my glasses off for the photo. I suppose that's because glasses can be disguising and it's easy enough for a police officer to ask you to take them off when he/she is checking your license.

My photo looks odd to me without glasses on, though. I look like I have a bad cold or something.

Apparently, it's just harder for people who let their licenses expire without renewal: all the horror stories I'm hearing have that minor detail in common.
